Assign owners & care team

Connect the people responsible for an animal — owners, co-owners, trainers, farriers — and who can authorize treatment.

A patient is connected to the contacts who own and care for it. One is the primary owner (the default party you bill); others can be co-owners or care-team members like a trainer or farrier.

Prerequisites: the patient exists, and the people are already contacts.

Steps

  1. Open the patient from Patients.
  2. Find the owners / care team section on the detail page.
  3. Click to add a connection.
  4. Search for and select the contact.
  5. Choose the relationship (owner, co-owner, trainer, farrier, referring vet, and so on).
  6. Mark the primary owner if this is the one you'll bill by default.
  7. Set any permissions, such as who can authorize treatment.
  8. Click Save.

You'll know it worked when…

The person appears in the patient's owners/care-team section with their relationship, and the primary owner is the one offered first when you bill.

Note: Changing an owner doesn't touch the animal's medical history — the people and the records are kept separate by design.

Multiple owners

A horse can have several owners. When you bill work for an animal with co-owners — or a syndicate — you can split the invoice between them. See Split billing.
