Assign owners & care team
Connect the people responsible for an animal — owners, co-owners, trainers, farriers — and who can authorize treatment.
A patient is connected to the contacts who own and care for it. One is the primary owner (the default party you bill); others can be co-owners or care-team members like a trainer or farrier.
Prerequisites: the patient exists, and the people are already contacts.
Steps
- Open the patient from Patients.
- Find the owners / care team section on the detail page.
- Click to add a connection.
- Search for and select the contact.
- Choose the relationship (owner, co-owner, trainer, farrier, referring vet, and so on).
- Mark the primary owner if this is the one you'll bill by default.
- Set any permissions, such as who can authorize treatment.
- Click Save.
You'll know it worked when…
The person appears in the patient's owners/care-team section with their relationship, and the primary owner is the one offered first when you bill.
Note: Changing an owner doesn't touch the animal's medical history — the people and the records are kept separate by design.
Multiple owners
A horse can have several owners. When you bill work for an animal with co-owners — or a syndicate — you can split the invoice between them. See Split billing.
