Add inventory items

Create a medication or supply with its price, dispensing unit, and properties.

An inventory item is something you stock and may dispense — a medication, vaccine, or supply. Setting it up lets you bill it on visits and track how much you have left.

Prerequisites: Admin or appropriate permission. Categories and suppliers help, but you can add them later.

Add an item

  1. Go to Inventory → New item (or add from Settings).
  2. Fill in:
    • Name and a client-facing display name.
    • A category (Medications, Vaccines, Supplies…).
    • The dispensing unit — how you measure it out (each, mL, tablet, capsule, dose, vial, etc.).
    • The default price the client pays, and whether it's taxable.
    • Flags: controlled substance and prescription required, if applicable.
    • (Optional) a reorder point and quantity, and a preferred supplier.
    • (Optional) default notes (internal and client-facing).
  3. Save.

You'll know it worked when…

The item appears in your Inventory list and can be added to a visit when you dispense it.

Note: The controlled-substance and prescription flags are informational labels in decavet — they help your team handle items correctly but don't, on their own, enforce restrictions.
