Add a client
Create a new client contact, with their address, contact methods, and billing preferences.
A client is a contact you treat animals for and bill. This is usually the first thing you do for a new customer, before adding their animals.
Prerequisites: none — anyone on your team can add a contact.
Steps
- Click Contacts in the top navigation.
- Click New Contact. A panel slides in from the side.
- Choose the contact type:
- Individual for a person.
- Business for a company or organization (you'll enter a company name instead of a first/last name).
- Enter their name.
- Set the category to Client so they appear in your client list and get billing options.
- Add an address. As you type, decavet suggests matching addresses — picking one fills in the details and the map location, which helps with travel and routing later.
- Under Contact methods, add at least one way to reach them — an email and a mobile number are typical. Mark which are okay for billing and texts (see Contact methods & opt-ins).
- (Optional) Set billing preferences: a discount profile, a preferred payment method, and a tax-exempt flag with a reason if they don't pay tax.
- (Optional) Add any notes.
- Click Save.
You'll know it worked when…
You land on the new client's detail page and they appear in your Contacts list under the Client category.
Tip: Right after saving, you can add their animals from the same page — look for the option to add a patient. See Add a patient.
Adding a couple or family
If a horse is owned by a married couple, don't create two contacts. Add the second person as an additional name on the same record — see Households.
